ABOUT US
We hope YOU will make a difference and join For a Strawless Sea!
A plastic utensil from your favorite takeout place. The toothbrush you use every night and morning. The bag containing chips you ate for lunch. These are everyday items that you and millions of others probably use without second thought, but what if we told you these seemingly harmless items contribute to a single-use epidemic that continues to proliferate our everyday lives?
Changing lifestyles and market competition have pushed single-use materials to invade our everyday lives. At first, plastic was a brilliant innovation, but it soon turned into an addiction that satisfies our need for convenience. This addiction has resulted and will continue to result in extremely dire consequences for humanity and the planet. Take, for instance, the recent studies that show the presence of plastics in marine life and rain!
The For a Strawless Sea Club was created in the fall of 2018 to tackle this problem directly. Although we are established as an extracurricular club at Yorktown, we focus the majority of our efforts outside of school; we volunteer with EcoAction Arlington’s Straw Free Campaign, are in the process of pitching a reusable to-go box program with the Global Co Lab’s Plastics’ Hub, and hold informative stands at local farmers markets (see our Events Page for more information).
Ultimately, we hope our efforts have encouraged and will continue to encourage our community to consider (1) their consumer habits and (2) companies’ practices. We are a group of teens trying to inspire positive change, but in the end we need government and companies by our side to achieve a more sustainable future.
What is so unique about this club is that it involves every field of study, even digital design and economics, so any type of student with any interest can find a way to contribute!
